... is kind of hard when the zoo uses a dyed donkey for it's Zebra display.

Zoos in the United States can be evaluated by determining if they are members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA, http://www.aza.org/). They hold members to a higher standard. I don't visit non-members.

Some zoos do a great job of public education, promoting conservation, and humanely housing their animals. Others, well, seem to be in it for entertainment ($$) only.

But yes, as far as I can tell it's true - although worse things have happened to zoo animals in war zones, especially the dangerous ones like the big cats in both of these stories.

The living conditions they keep that Donkey in are probably way worse (from it's perspective) than it's new paint job.
